PHNOM PENH: The Board of Directors of the FUNCINPEC Party held a special meeting on Friday afternoon (25 March) to review and discuss the revision of the party's internal regulations, and to support the priority policy for the upcoming commune council elections.

The meeting was chaired by Party President Prince Norodom Chakravuth, with a total of 54 party leaders in attendance.

Party Spokesperson, Nheun Raden, told EAC News that the party members decided to revise the party's internal rules in accordance with the leadership of Prince Norodom Chakravuth, supporting the draft of nine priority policies for the commune council elections, with the overall aim of strengthening internal unity for the party to be successful at the upcoming elections and win seats again.

In the past, FUNCINPEC internal affairs have been rocky, as seen through the dispute over the party's seal, the removal of members and the disagreement over the selection of a new president. These incidents have done serious damage to the reputation of the royalist party. However, following the election of Prince Norodom Chakravuth as the new Party President on 9 February 2022, the party's image is slowly in the process of being restored.

FUNCINPEC was a popular party during the first election from 1993 to 1998, however, due to several bouts of internal divisions, the party continued to lose support over the years from the public. FUNCINPEC won 43 seats in the 1998 election, 26 seats in the 2003 election and 2 seats in 2008. In the last two elections in 2013 and 2018, the party failed to win any seats.

Since being elected as the new FUNCINPEC Party President, Prince Norodom Chakravuth has promised to lead FUNCINPEC to glory and popularity once again.
